Slow Up Basel

Slow Up Basel is an event held in the area around Basel city. Roads are closed down for cars, allowing human powered vehicles to take over the urban space and cruise around celebrating the eco-friendly means of transportation and the beauty of the regin we live in.
We joined the party at 11 on sunday morning with our friends Henna and Juan.

Ready for 46 km of French, Swiss and German country side.

The trip was two loops of each 23 km with an infinite numbers of entries and exits. Everyone can join anywhere and it is free. People were cycling, roller-skating and running and because the roads were closed for other trafic, it was a whole new way of exploring the country side.

Several places we could get a break from riding and enjoy refreshments, live music or even massage. There were people all over and a lot of families spend the afternoon together on the bikes.

Henna and Anja enjoying a break and a free müsli bar.

Luckily for us, the sun broke through the clouds around noon making it even more enjoyable. The last part of the trip went through France along the Rhine where there is really nice atmosphere all year long.

Ingen hænder - ingen tænder! (Anja enjoying herself)

We ended the day with lunch by the Rhine after a nice, relaxed, carbon-sustainable exploration of the Basel region. Great initiativ by the French/German/Swiss organisation. Support bicycling culture!

Hello Anja,

I hope this is your name. Thank you for letting the world know about this wonderful event. I love the Slow Up Basel idea. I live in Canada and to my knowledge we have no days or events of this kind. I would love to have events of this kind on Vancouver Island BC. I will take the information to a Green Drinks event I am going to and let people in our community know what Europeans are doing to save the planet. You helped all the world by your carbon free experience. Thank you for sharing.

Peace & Blessings,

Robert
